Rhizome Relaunch Bugs 3

Thanks to Rhizome.org for fixing all but one of the broken links listed here and here. Those were from my old blog. Have found a fresh crop that don't work (all found in tommoody.us posts). In the pairs below, the non-underscored link, which doesn't redirect to the new post, is followed by the current, working link for the post. Speaking of redirects, many of these "dead" links below don't go to a "page not found" page but rather land on an earlier post in same category (news, editorial, etc.). This isn't helpful because the reader may spend time trying to figure out why the incorrect post is relevant. Once again, it was interesting to go back and revisit arguments, some old, some ongoing. Sorry if this public bug-hunting seems mean-spirited, as one Rhizome commenter stated; that's not my intent, just being a link nerd.

Rhizome's links to Michael Smith's Open House project have been changed. http://www.rhizome.org/artbase/Open_House is now http://archive.rhizome.org/Open_House/. That is also now the root URL for the individual rooms I linked to: http://archive.rhizome.org/Open_House/FP/FPmenu.html, http://archive.rhizome.org/Open_House/FP/closet.html, and http://archive.rhizome.org/Open_House/FP/storage.html

http://rhizome.org/editorial/fp/blog.php/905 has been changed to http://rhizome.org/editorial/2008/jul/11/interview-with-joampatildeo-ribas/ (that's João Ribas)

http://rhizome.org/editorial/news/?timestamp=20080630 has been changed to http://rhizome.org/editorial/2008/jun/30/go-ahead-touch-her/

http://rhizome.org/editorial/news/?timestamp=20080516 is now http://rhizome.org/editorial/2008/may/16/tweaking-tweets/ (news item re-categorized as an editorial item)

http://rhizome.org/editorial/news/?timestamp=20080602 has been changed to http://rhizome.org/editorial/2008/jun/2/net-aesthetics-20/.

The date of this announcement is incorrect: the panel described in it took place in 2006, not 2008.

http://rhizome.org/editorial/fp/blog.php/689 has been changed to http://rhizome.org/editorial/2008/apr/28/video-of-futures-of-the-internet-panel/

Rhizome Relaunch Bugs 2

An earlier post on the 2011 relaunch of Rhizome.org contains a list of links to the site from my Digital Media Tree blog that are still broken, as well as a few that were fixed. The broken links are listed below. The first URL of these pairs is a dead link found on my old blog that doesn't redirect to a new page; the second is its current location, tracked down searching words or phrases on the Rhizome search page. Revisiting/revising these old posts serves as research for my eventual book The Lost Years: Art on the Internet Between The Dot Com Crash and the Rise of Facebook, as well as boring personal recordkeeping. In upcoming posts will do a similar compilation of dead links to Rhizome from my current blog. Much of the writing doesn't make sense if these links don't work, so I am correcting them in the posts via updates.

These links aren't just about my work; have been covering the scene for a while now so it's a diverse collection.

Update, July 2011: The links listed above have all been fixed by Rhizome (thanks!) with the exception of the one New Museum link.

Rhizome Relaunch Bugs

Convo we're having about Rhizome.org Relaunch Bugs. A commenter says it's "a tad mean spirited" to publicly point out broken links. It's been a month now and it was supposed to be a week; some people care.

tommoody | Sat, Jan 22nd, 2011 2:12 p.m.
Hi, Nick,
[...] Some bugs:
The reblog posts are now tagged as "reblog archive" but archived as "editorial"--this breaks incoming links.
Here are a handful of links from my site and elsewhere that no longer work:
http://rhizome.org/editorial/fp/reblog.php/1853/ (announcing Marisa Olson's "The GIF Show")*
http://rhizome.org/editorial/fp/reblog.php/2299/* (Marisa reblogged my Time Lapse Molecule 2 .gif - the post still exists but the URL to my site is gone from the post so it appears Marisa made the GIF. Here is the current location: http://rhizome.org/editorial/2006/jul/19/time-lapse-molecule-2/)
http://www.rhizome.org/events/gifshow/*
I will look on my blogs and see what else may be broken.
Best, Tom

Hey Tom,
I'm working on fixing old linkbacks, and other bugs as well. Hopefully we'll have all the kinks work out in a week or so.
Thanks for your patience everyone!
Nick

tommoody | Wed, Feb 23rd, 2011 10:14 a.m.
Hi, Nick,
It's been almost a month and the above links still aren't working. Paddy Johnson noticed some other errors and mentioned them on her twitter, specifically that the "Rhizome exhibition archives now almost all lead to dead links": http://rhizome.org/exhibitions/?page=3
The page above includes the "Professional Surfer" exhibit, which Brad Troemel and others have claimed as an example of the institutionalization of surf clubs. Right now that exhibit can't be found anywhere on Rhizome:
http://rhizome.org/events/timeshares/professionalsurfer.php*
So it's impossible to prove Troemel correct or incorrect unless someone made a screenshot or probes the haze of collective memory via interviews with people who might have witnessed the page.
We went through this a couple of years ago and you did get the redirects fixed fairly promptly. I will continue to note broken links here.
Best, Tom

Why do this in public? - I'm sure it's all in good faith but it comes over as a tad mean sprited [sic].

tommoody | Wed, Feb 23rd, 2011 11:33 a.m.
Michael, it's a public website and a public record, and these links aren't being fixed. If someone follows a link from my blog and it doesn't work, it's easier to "get the word out" via blog posts than email everyone who might have ever read my blog and been annoyed by link rot.
Also, this is the second round of broken links we've had to deal with in a couple of years. See http://www.tommoody.us/archives/2009/12/19/fundraisers-afc-and-rhizome/ Sorry if my peevishness about that comes off to you as mean-spirited.
Correction to above: Troemel's claim of museum support for surf clubs was based on certain of their members being included in the "Unmonumental" show in 2008. (See http://fourninetyone.com/2011/01/06/fromclubstoaffinity/ - but beware that [the essay] has many inaccuracies, as Michael Manning and others have noted.) Troemel may not have been aware of the "Professional Surfer" exhibit in January 2007, since he is claiming the clubs had "underdog" status at that time. In any case, it would be good to have the record of what actually happened restored as soon as possible. (This stuff is still being argued about.)

Here's just a sampling of other broken links to Rhizome content, from my Digital Media Tree blog (I searched "Rhizome" to generate this list and will continue to add to it from my current blog and other sources):

http://www.rhizome.org/fp.rhiz?id=3860*
http://rhizome.org/thread.rhiz?thread=26212*
http://www.rhizome.org/fp.rhiz?id=3616*
http://rhizome.org/thread.rhiz/?thread=24996&page=1#47095*
http://rhizome.org/fp.rhiz/?id=2463*
http://www.rhizome.org/fp.rhiz?id=1853*
http://rhizome.org/events/net_aesthetics_2_0/*
http://www.rhizome.com/fp.rhiz?id=1416*
http://rhizome.org/fp.rhiz/?id=898*
http://rhizome.org/thread.rhiz?thread=19080&page=1#36375* (changed at some point to http://rhizome.org/discuss/view/19080, which works, but please note HTML formatting errors are breaking almost every link on the page now)
http://www.rhizome.com/fp.rhiz?id=666*
http://www.newmuseum.org/now_cur_RhizomeArtBase101.htm
http://rhizome.org/netartnews/story.rhiz/?×tamp=20050518*
http://www.rhizome.org/rsg/*

Eventually my own links will break--although so far ten years of blogging has managed to be preserved with no redirects, thanks to Jim, Barry, and Ed--but I'm not a public institution.

*Update, March 10, 2011: Am using this post to test links - some of them are working now, and this Archive Page restores some missing content. Links mentioned in the post above that have been fixed (am adding to this - work in progress):

http://rhizome.org/editorial/2006/apr/29/gifs-galore-and-more/

http://rhizome.org/editorial/2006/jul/19/time-lapse-molecule-2/ (but my reblogged GIF still appears to be Marisa's)

http://archive.rhizome.org:8080/exhibition/gifshow/

http://rhizome.org/events/net_aesthetics_2_0/

http://rhizome.org/events/timeshares/professionalsurfer.php has been semi-fixed - it takes you to the Time Shares page and from there you click on a link to the Professional Surfer exhibit page

http://www.rhizome.org/rsg/ now redirects to the RSG (Radical Software Group) homepage

The links above without asterisks are still broken.

Update, March 24, 2011: Post announcing the Rhizome Archive (with my feedback)

Update, July 2011: The links listed above have all been fixed by Rhizome (thanks!) with the exception of one New Museum link. I added asterisks to all the posts listed above where the links were fixed.

Nike's ad agency "just does it" to Rhizome (part 2)

Four years ago Rhizome.org did a site re-design and kept me busy tracking all the broken links from my blog. I lack the heart to go through that again for their latest gratuitous re-do.

This time the links are crashing my browser (Firefox on Linux Mint and Windows 7). My current plan is to only visit Rhizome using the Wayback Machine, to find links to old content that is now unreadable due to formatting errors, and to try to rebuild my profile with all the comments that have become de-linked from it.

Judging from what I heard on dump.fm and elsewhere, many artists were shocked when they visited their profiles after the redo. I sort of felt like crying.

Fortunately Nasty Nets can still be found if you have an existing link. But it doesn't come up when you search the Artbase.

Rhizome is all messed up

The art and technology website Rhizome.org hired a fancy ad agency to redesign their site and links are breaking all over.
Good thing I saved all my comments in that ring binder a while back because the archive where they're collected has disappeared.
Comments aren't gone, they're incorporated as text into individual posts but they're no longer tied to individual users or compiled in a separate database.
The fancy ad agency is Wieden+Kennedy -- they do Coca Cola and the like. You can really tell. This is a suit's idea of what art is supposed to look like. Cra-a-a-zy upside down fonts and self-consciously glitched out captions. Pass the bong, said the account executive.
But the design flaws, such as content-obscuring menus, are just unprofessional. An earnest amateur who cared about the site would have done a more conscientious job.
Possibly this was done "pro bono" -- by an intern who had never heard of Rhizome three weeks ago.*
Just an example of the carnage: this interview Cory Arcangel did with me is now an impenetrable block of type, with no paragraph breaks or other formatting. (Caution: links to Rhizome posts have been crashing my browser.) Fortunately the Wayback Machine has a readable version.

Rhizome's digital conservator Dragan Espenschied has his work cut out for him: restoring functionality to his employer's website. Dragan, old internet friend, let me know if I can help -- I can make pages in HTML where links don't break and the pages don't crash.

A friend sent me this graphic from Zuckerbergland:

1446517705994-dumpfm-tommoody-rhizome_readability

*Update: Rhizome's announcement of the redesign states that "this process, which involved a year of intensive discussion, design, and development, was enabled and led by the visionaries at Wieden+Kennedy New York, and built by our excellent Senior Developer, Matthew Conlen, with crucial support from developer Max Nanis." Dear visionaries, can you help me find Nasty Nets in the Artbase? It doesn't come up when I search the words "nasty" or "nets."

possible dump img replacement link

Update, Jan. 2018: Gradually many of the form and content bugs complained of above were repaired by Rhizome. Ironically in the time since I wrote this post, Dump.fm went down, taking with it my screenshots of Rhizome design snafus at the time of relaunch. Did someone mention "the web" is an unstable environment? Sadly, the Wieden+Kennedy mobile-friendly design persists: when you expand, say, the blog page to PC-width, the posts disperse into strange, random-seeming configurations. The writing in the blog posts themselves is hidden and requires clicking on a teaser headline. Essentially Rhizome followed the pack so that its site looks like Forbes, Bloomberg, and other big-media outfits -- i.e., trendy and bad. An educated guess is these sites are moving away from HTML to "json" or similar scripted means of page assembly. The DIY days of simple, clear, easily duplicated content-delivery methods are long behind us.
