touch screen fantasy
Demo of Bitwig Studio's digital audio workstation, with touchscreen capability. [Hooktube]
This looks cool and futuristic but:
1. It seems partly about selling Microsoft Surface tablets, which means you have to surrender to Redmond's invasive signup requirements, Windows 10 spyware, and the rest of it, and trust that your tablet will work as advertised in controlling a music synthesizer.
2. Presumably the draw is interactivity in live performance situations. The presenter switches to a mouse at certain points in this demo, so fingering the glass may not always be the best way to work.
the far center
Bill Clinton biographer Joe Conason begins a recent article with this sentence:
In certain precincts on the American left — and especially in some places where the far left blurs into the far right — it is considered clever to dismiss the Russia investigation as a relic of the Cold War, an opportunistic Clintonite ploy, or both.
Yes, Joe, that's the "far center," where reality blurs into reality. Dismissal of the New Red Scare isn't half as clever as the scare itself, concocted by Clintonites to distract from their incompetent campaign, where they insisted the US was in great shape after eight years of Obama. The scare isn't so much a Cold War relic, though, as McCarthyism 2.0 -- an attempt to use foreign enemies to distract from corruption at home, while justifying an ongoing military buildup.
theme diary: "comments off" removed from each individual post
In a previous post regarding my new, javascript-heavy, mobile-responsive WordPress theme I groused:
Would... like to remove the phrase "comments off" that appears in each post; that seems like a needless provocation for the "no comments means intellectual fascism" contingent.
Believe or not, yrs truly was once frequently smeared for having comments turned off. One hater actually created a mirror site of tommoody.us with a comment feature added. Those were the days when blogs mattered!
OK, so the words "Comments Off" are now gone, after some, uh, internet research. The WordPress Theme Editor was no help, the php file had to be edited as described in a Google-cached post from a site that is now a fake blog. (Nazgoz: How To Remove Comments Off Text From WordPress Post Title).
To edit the php file gedit was added as the default editor for php files in Filezilla.
Now there is a dangling hyphen after the date (or my name on a page with a single post) under each post title. Will nail this eventually. [Update: hat tip to Rene Abythe for a CSS suggestion that got rid of the hyphen.)
