Mighty Sore, etc.
From Don Markstein's Toonopedia:
Unlike most parody publications, Not Brand Echh had continuing characters. Charlie America stood in for Captain America, The Inedible Bulk for The Incredible Hulk, Mighty Sore for The Mighty Thor, Scaredevil for Daredevil, etc. Eventually, the title fielded a resident superhero of its own, Forbush-Man (aka Irving Forbush, another letter column schtick, this one going back to 1955). The latter, in the grand tradition of superhero spoofs (e.g., Supersnipe, Captain Klutz, Super Goof), wore red long johns as a prominent element of his costume.
By the ninth issue (December, 1968), it appeared Not Brand Echh had become a sales sensation — that was the first in its new format, extra-thick but costing about twice as much as most comics. But perhaps not, as the next one, billed as "The Worst of Not Brand Echh", consisted entirely of reprints from early issues. After #13 (May, 1969), it was canceled.
He's Still Got Muslim in Him
That's a quote from the McCain supporter who called Obama an "Arab terrorist" before the candidate took the mike from her hand. When a reporter reminded her that while Obama's father was a Muslim, the Democratic contender is Christian, the McCainiac said, "Yeah , but he's still got Muslim in him."
On Paddy Johnson's blog a while back, in the comments, we were treated to some speechmaking about the virtues of small towns by someone who admits to no longer living in one. Yes, yes, they have virtues, but they also have dumb-as-posts bigots, like the one just quoted. It was those small town residents we were talking about. OK?
"Devine Hummer"
"Devine Hummer" [mp3 removed]
A Reaktor preset that I'm guessing Richard Devine did on contract for them. Variations I did: slight timbral and melodic adjustments every four bars, then a pad, then some beats that work slightly against the groove. Miami art bass made nerdy. Am in awe of the high pitched "scratch" sounds RD made using delay.
